Monsoon Madness
In the state of Arizona, we have a unique weather pattern that takes place because of the extreme heat of summer. Known as the monsoons, the intense desert heat creates a low-pressure system that pulls moisture from the Sea of Cortez and the Gulf of Mexico, creating significant and dramatic thunderstorms and rainfall.
The amount of rain that can fall in a short amount of time is intense. Thinking about this the other day, I did the math. Think about a normal city-block size in our city of Flagstaff having one inch of rainfall, which is not uncommon at all because just last week, this area received two inches in an hour. A gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds, and one inch of rain equals approximately 27,154 gallons of water per acre. One city block is roughly 40 acres. So, 40 acres would add up to 1,085,760 gallons of water. At 8.34 pounds per gallon, that equals a total of approximately 9,043,575 pounds. That’s 9 million pounds of water! Can you imagine the weight of the clouds hanging over your head when these storms come?
To give you an idea of what that water weight represents, it is equivalent to the weight of approximately 754 elephants. And that’s just one inch of rain over a relatively small city block. A storm covering one square mile? Well, that would be the equivalent of approximately 12,100 elephants hanging overhead.
The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. Isaiah 55:10
Our Father has created a faithful and amazing hydrologic cycle that naturally desalinates ocean water and then, through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, waters the earth with life-giving nourishment. If your Father in Heaven continues to deliver such a wonderful, free gift, I believe He will show Himself faithful to deliver to you the insight, wisdom, and grace you need to make it through any dry season.
He will provide what you need to flourish and give you future seed for strength and stability. Your spirit is much more valuable to Him. He will refresh you. He will rain down upon you His Word and His hope.
He is for you, not against you.
