Sedona Red

Just a short drive from where Jenny and I live in Flagstaff is the region and town of Sedona. This area has some of the most exquisite and unique beauty on the planet. The rock formations and skyward cliffs of intense red and gold rock against the crystal blue skyline are breathtaking. Travelers from all over the world come to Sedona to view and hike its beauty. Deep red colored rock and soil dramatically visible in this area has been given its own name: “Sedona Red.” 

My mind often recalls when seeing the Sedona area the definition of God’s creation - the first man, Adam. The name Adam means “soil.” The root word in Hebrew, Adom, means “red dirt.”

You and I are just red dirt - made from the earth, and we return to the earth. This is both humbling and healing for our mental health, when we accept this truth. 

And yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand. Isaiah 64:8

Red dirt - clay - nothing really of value or significance, until the Master places his hands upon us. To be formed by the Father and allow him to do as he wishes is true security and meaning. You and I are just a lump of soil, but yielded to his design and pressure we become an object of redemption and vessel for the very Spirit of God. Scripture states that Christ became the Second Adam bringing forth a new creation in mankind. Christ found in you, in the red clay of your humanity, creates a new and living being, revealing his creative beauty for eternity. Trust him and allow him to shape you today.
