Formless and Dark... Look Up
There are often times and even seasons in our lives whenwe wonder, “Where is God in all this?” Possibly due to loss or grief, stress or disappointment, sometimes it has to do with a feeling of overall sadness or depression. And these questions rattle in our soul and beat us up on the inside. “Where did God go? Why don’t I see him moving or setting things up for my benefit or success? It seems like I’m in the dark and nothing is happening from his heart and life to mine”
The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Genesis 1:1,2
This interesting statement at the very beginning of Genesis says a great deal for us to remember. All matter was without shape and form, when there was more shadow than light and when darkness seemingly was here to stay. The same can at times be true of the raw material of your life. You have submitted your spirit, soul and mind to the Fathers touch, and where is he? Your senses only pick up seemingly formless shapes, nothing concrete or strong, shadows lurk around the edges of your mind. And your soul is empty and needs sunshine. You deeply desire some visible sign of His grace, presence and activity, and where is it?
Oh, but the Holy Spirit is hovering! Hovering: in place and present, abiding in all that’s undone, already moving to fulfill and complete. Holy Spirit is in the room. The Spirit is moving, already in position to carry out the very spoken commands of the Father. The Spirit of God was evident and making ready the glorious revelation of divine handiwork. So recall this truth even before any visible or tangible beauty, form or life is realized. Holy Spirit is on the job site moving to release the wonder and the amazing display of the Father’s design. Lift up your head and take hope that at any moment new life will spring forth.
