Good News

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. Luke 2:8,9

The Mishnah (a written collection of the Jewish oral traditions that are known as the Oral Torah) relates that the flocks, pastured just outside of Bethlehem, were destined for Temple sacrifices. In addition, the shepherds, who watched over them, were not ordinary shepherds. These shepherds were taking care of the sheep that would need to be brought to the Temple, and the sheep needed to be pure in appearance and without defect. These shepherds had a specific task to care for the lambs and sheep that were dedicated for the forgiveness of people’s sin and trespasses.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. Luke 2:10,11

The Angels appear to these who were on assignment just outside the town of David and declared that a Savior would intervene and bring freedom to those who are under the spell of sin.

This direct connection was not wasted on these shepherds, for they knew that this child had something to do with the forgiveness of sin and a Lamb who cleanses sin for all who receive and believe. For you and me, the more we know, the more we realize the amazing plan and purpose of a loving Father desiring to bring his children into friendship covenant. This is such good news, and it causes wonderful great joy for all who yield to the Savior.
