Final Destination

Sep 7, 2025

Let’s say you’re going to take a vacation and you have decided on the destination, maybe it’s an Alaskan Cruise or a trip to Disney, or to one of the National parks like Yosemite, or even a beach vacation in Hawaii. You have made the decision and now you begin the process of working backwards with the details of planning.  What mode of transportation should we use to get there? When do we need to leave? What would we like to do on the way? What we will do on our first day, second day, what excursions or places we want to see, and so forth. Jenny and I had the wonderful privilege of taking a Hawaiian vacation. The destination changed the items we put in the suitcase. We had to mentally change our mindset from the cold winter temperatures of Flagstaff to the beach shorts and T-shirts of Hawaii.

Principle: The destination determines your daily actions.  Your final life destination will determine your daily choices. Your future home will impact your daily activity.

Scripture says,

Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. …Col 3:1

As followers of Christ I submit to you that we need to think more about the beauty of our final destination - Heaven - and thus it will show up in fruitful actions. When we have a clear view of our destination and consider Heaven and its amazing reality, we will see the beneficial outcomes in real time. Thinking more about Heaven will change the way you do relationships. It will impact your spending habits and checking account. Some things will be of less importance and other things like family, forgiveness, unity, will be of more importance. I leave you with this wonderful thought:

“If you read history, you will find that the Christians that did the most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in’ aim at earth and you get neither.”  CS Lewis
